Flight cancellation: what to do? And what are the allowances?
Since 2004, EU regulation 261/2004 obliges the company to offer you a re-routing to the destination concerned and those under the same conditions (as soon as possible or at a later date). Another alternative, it must also offer you the reimbursement of your ticket in the event of a canceled flight, a missed connection, or denied boarding. This European regulation also allows you to receive a lump sum compensation which can reach 600 € per passage!
To be able to benefit from these indemnities, your canceled flight must however meet certain criteria: it must be departing from a member country of the EU, whatever the nationality of the operator. If it is an arrival in the EU, the regulation is only applicable on European companies. All companies, regular, charter or low-cost, are affected, but only if the incident is attributable to them. Your appeal will not be followed up in the event of bad weather conditions or a controllers’ strike …).

Furthermore, since this legislation is European, the flight must depart from an EU member country, regardless of the operator’s nationality. If it is arriving in the EU, the regulation is only applicable on European companies, however, all companies, whether regular, charter or low-cost, are affected.Last point to know: the compensation does not depend on the price of the ticket but varies depending on the distance of the flight. It can range from 250 to 600 € per passenger.
Who can be compensated?
All passengers, regardless of their nationality, can claim compensation for a flight delayed, canceled or overbooked by Air Astana. It is therefore not necessary to be European or to live in Europe to claim compensation. What is taken into account by the European Regulations is the origin and destination of the flight.
As long as the departure airport is located in one of the 28 countries of the European Union (including the overseas territories), Norway, Iceland or Switzerland, the air passenger can claim compensation. However, if the airport is located outside one of the 28 countries of the European Union, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland, it is imperative that the flight be carried out by a registered airline. in the European Union to be able to claim compensation.
