Traveling with Air Corsica: The unexpected can turn everything upside down

Summer vacation is fast approaching. Have you already planned to take off? To do this, you will most likely have to go through the Airplane box. Flight delays, canceled flights, overbooking, you know? However, these frequent situations are not normal.

A small delay of 30 minutes is not, in itself very serious. But a connection canceled less than a week before departure, access denied on the plane due to overbooking or a delay of more than 3 hours, there, it is no longer the same thing. Faced with these inconveniences, know that you are not destitute.

You may not think about it and the airlines don’t advertise it, but in some cases, they have to pick you up on the spot and compensate you. Read on to find out more and go on vacation or at least to the airport with confidence.

Your rights in the event of hazards

For a delayed flight, you are entitled to reimbursement and / or compensation. It all depends on the distance of the flight and the duration of the delay. The airline must take charge of you or offer reimbursement of your ticket if you wish. You are also entitled to compensation if your delay falls into one of these categories:

– Your flight is for a distance of 1500 km or less and the delay is 2 hours or more,
– Your connection in the EU is 3 hours or more late and the destination is more than 1500 km,
– Your plane outside the EU is 3 hours or more late and the destination is 1,500 to 3,500 km,
– Your flight does not correspond to the first three and is delayed by 4 hours or more.

For an overbooked flight Air Corsica has sold more tickets than seats for a flight) you are entitled to the same compensation.

What if your plane never takes off?

Please note that Air Corsica has the obligation to compensate you if it has not notified you of the cancellation of your flight at least fourteen days (2 weeks) before the date of your departure. Clearly, if you are warned a week before departure, 1 day before or when you arrive at the airport, the airline company must compensate you.

The airline may, however, cancel the flight without respecting this deadline if it is a case of force majeure. Wondering what is force majeure? This is an event that the airline cannot foresee and prevent, making the cancellation of the flight inevitable. A natural disaster, dangerous weather conditions or a strike by airport workers can force the airline to cancel a flight at the last minute. You will be entitled to reimbursement or rescheduling of your flight, but not additional compensation.

Benefit from support + compensation each time your flight is late

Regarding care, the Corsican airline must provide you with food, it must allow you to inform your loved ones of the situation and offer you accommodation in the event of significant delay. Example: if no flight on the same day can be offered to you. This applies if you still want to go to the intended destination but have to wait for seats to become available on another flight. Of course you will not have to advance any costs, you will get a seat on a new flight, for free.

If on the contrary, you no longer wish to travel or wish to postpone your trip, because of this delay, overbooking or cancellation, the airline in charge of your flight must reimburse you in full for the price of your ticket. In addition to coverage or reimbursement, you have the right to compensation if your flight corresponds to one of the cases mentioned above.

How is the amount of compensation calculated?

Air Corsica did not notify you in time and the cancellation is not linked to a case of force majeure. Your flight has a delay that meets the criteria above, or the plane is overbooked. You are then entitled to compensation, according to the conditions presented below:

– If you travel 1500 km or less, you are entitled to € 250.

– For an EU flight of more than 1500 km and / or for flights outside the EU of 1500 to 3500 km, the compensation will amount to € 400.

– For flights outside the EU which exceed 3500 km, you are entitled to compensation of € 600.

Are your rights to compensation retained even if your ticket is provided by a travel agency?

You may be wondering if you can benefit from these indemnities if your ticket was booked in an agency and not directly with the airline. Don’t worry, in both cases, you are entitled to the benefits provided. Indeed, the airline could not refuse to compensate you if it informed the travel agency at least 2 weeks before, but that the latter did not warn you.

The airlines remains responsible for sending you the information at least two weeks before. Example: the airline cancels a flight scheduled for July 2, 2017, and notifies the travel agency on June 10, 2017. The deadline is respected. However, the travel agency does not notify you until June 25, 2017. You will be entitled to compensation from the airline.

Remember that you are armed in the face of such unforeseen events, provided of course that you meet the criteria.
